National and International regulatory agencies require that personal care products (cosmetics, natural care, topical drugs, OTC products, home/surface care products or functional food, nutraceuticals, dietary supplements, vitamins) available in the market, do not cause harm to human health, when applied under normal and reasonably foreseeable conditions of use. Adequate information must be readily available to demonstrate product safety and this information should be kept on file with all other studies, supporting performance product claims.
The development of a new product is a long pathway with full of pitfalls. Before the commercialization of the new developed product, clinical tests are usually carried on by an independent laboratory (or in-house when facilities allow it) to learn more about the product’s characteristics through in-vivo clinical studies.
A clinical trial goals to demonstrate or to review the product’s effects to determine the performance claims later. Consequently, it confirms all the attributes on the marketing support (labels, packaging, catalogues, advertisements, companies’ websites and social media). It is important for the company to be honest and consistent especially on everything that is presented explicitly and implicitly on their products. Clinical efficacy studies permit to objectively check or confirm the performance of the product with scientific methods/techniques, Bioinstrumentation, laboratory testing.
Cliantha research utilizes consumer in-use test to assess product performance. This test can also be used to provide more details on related consumer behaviour to facilitate design of a consumer-friendly product.
Further, consumers can easily evaluate the marketed product. Consumer perception is mapped in terms of packaging, daily use and various points where the product comes in contact with the human senses.
Complex products for skin care (make-up category) are a source of side-effects, which are unpredictable. These side-effects are sometime not “visible or are not tracked” during product design. Cliantha Consumer in-use testing helps in providing information on possible adverse skin reactions or skin intolerance.
Cliantha Consumer in-use testing is done in real-time conditions over a predefined period. During the course of the study, participants are asked in details on their perception about product performance. The data received from the participants is then converted into statistically relevant results.
Cliantha Research utilizes quantitative market research tools to understand consumer behaviour. This tool makes use of electronic surveys (questionnaires) sent via email to targeted consumers.
The key aspects of surveys include:
Cliantha Research has extensive expertise and experience in conducting focus group surveys. Focus group surveys involve the following:

Depending on the desired claims, Cliantha will provide you different methods/techniques with a variety of measuring advanced scientific bio-instruments. We designs studies using quantifiable parameters i.e. Clinical evaluation, Bio-instrumentation, Quality Life Questionnaires, Laboratory {Micro, Path lab, Biomarkers, Histopath, Special Investigation i.e. Skin Biopsy/Ultrasound, etc.}, Consumer Index, Diaries - that allow the products of to be safe and effective on the market. We support client to choose the most appropriate technique using bio-instrumental or imaging methods to demonstrate the desired claims.
The instruments used are well-known in the industry for decades and produced by well-known industries such as:
Intended to measure viscoelastic properties (elasticity, firmness, tonicity and suppleness) of the skin.
The Corneometer indicates the hydration level of the superficial layers of the skin (stratum corneum) via measurement of skin dielectric properties.
Skicon a device for measurement of skin conductance.
Novameter is used to obtain measurements of skin surface impedance to determine electroconductivity of the treatment sites. This meter provides a relative measure of the retained water content of the skin as a function of the skin’s dielectric value. Skin impedance is recorded automatically when equilibrium is achieved.
The Tewameter is a measuring device for the assessment of the trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL). This parameter provides information on the integrity of the skin protective barrier functions.
Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL), the low level of moisture that constantly transpires through the skin, is measured with a computerized Evaporimeter using the DermaLab System. A built-in A/D (analog-to-digital) converter streams data for analysis.
A reduction in TEWL generally indicates proportionately high film (barrier) integrity and/or wound closure in wound healing studies to see Skin Barrier Protection and Film Integrity.
Gloss measurement is important in the efficacy testing of skin care, hair care and decorative cosmetics (lipsticks, make-up, etc.). The Glossymeter evaluates the skin, hair surface gloss via measurement of light reflectance. The probe measures both the portion of directly reflected light mirrored from the surface, which is related to the gloss and the scattered portion as well.
There are many fields of application where changes in the skin color are of interest. This device measures simultaneously two major components of skin pigmentation: melanin and heamoglobin.
Sebumeter® is a device to assess skin surface sebum levels.
Probe has been specially designed with flat tip for skin pH measurement.
Skin Color evaluations: This evaluation method is ideal for skin lightening/whitening/brightening studies as well as tan accelerator evaluations and erythema suppression (counter irritation, anti-inflammatory).
Instrumental color measurements corroborate visual analysis. They are performed using a Minolta Chromameter and Spectrophotometer. A device detects subtle changes in color by a 3D/2D profile of hue, value, and chroma. These characteristics are then translated into Munsell color coordinates (L*, a*, b*). Any increase in the L* values indicates lightening of the skin color. The a* values represent relative red-to-green changes, and b* values represent relative blue-to-yellow changes.
Corneocytes levels can be evaluated by D-Squame® sampling. The sampling is performed using a specialized, transparent, adhesive disk maintained on the skin surface for 30 seconds.
The Skin’s barrier integrity is an important indicator of skin health, beauty and strength. The tape stripping method use to assess barrier quality of skin by visual erythema following tape-stripping procedure (to disrupt the barrier) phase using different tapes until a disqualifying erythema grade is achieved.
A Solar Simulator is a light source that approximates the illumination of natural sunlight. Different simulator models are used depending on the study types.
The AGE Reader provides an immediate cardiovascular risk prediction in 12 seconds. The AGE Reader has been designed for patient friendly diagnosis and allows doctors to practice personalized care and prevent disease (progression). The method is convenient, easy to use and extensively validated.
The Hot and Cold environment controlled area, is an enclosed area wherein the temperature and humidity remains uniform and within range throughout the area. The Hot and Cold environment controlled area normally has a range of temperature and relative humidity (RH) between 20ºC to 60ºC (100°F ± 2°F) and 30% to 95% RH respectively and used for Antiperspirant product testing using FDA monograph with gravimetric method.
A device to monitor/measure VSC (Volatile Sulur Compound) concentration in breath. VSC is common cause to product oral malaodor.
The system is a basic solution that offers 16 natural tooth shades and one that has been internationally established for decades. Tooth shade determination in a single step.
The camera allows for standardized, macroscopic photographs of the skin and the scalp called Phototrichogram. Hair Thickness, Hair Density, Hair Growth Rate and Scalp condition can be measured.
Multi-functional tress testing instrument with 3 accessories; combing (1) 3-point bend (2) hair friction (3) new accessories for curl compression, suppleness and single fibre tensile/dimensional measurements.
